IT'S TREEFORT!

We love festivals for the same reason we love doing a cooperative library—they show us how a space can be transformed when people come together, share resources, and bring their whole selves with them. Whether you have a pass or just like to enjoy the atmosphere downtown, we hope you’re getting out into the streets and enjoying what Treefort has to offer!

LET'S MAKE AN ALBUM!

Wait! What?

]We’d like to invite you to engage in some creative urban observation by collaborating with us on an album of field recordings and “audiograms” from the days and nights of this festival weekend.

We’re calling it STREET NOTES, and here’s what you need to know:

What’s a field recording?

Generally speaking, a field recording is any kind of audio recorded outside of a studio. They often pick up ambient sounds that evoke a particular environment, such as birdsong in a forest or the murmur of conversation at a sidewalk cafe. You can take out your phone any time and record a voice memo—you might be surprised what sounds define the space when you listen back later.

What’s an audiogram?

An audiogram is a short message that acts as a kind of “timestamp” for the place you’re in. Keep it anonymous (more on that below) but tell  us where you are, what’s going on, and share any thoughts or messages about Treefort you’d like to record.

How do I share my recordings?

If you record a voice memo using a smartphone, send it by email to library[at]placemakersunion.org (check out the how-to photos for some tips).

What's yer handle?

Include a fun nickname or DJ handle in the message so we can credit you while still maintaining privacy, or let us you know if you prefer to just be credited as “anonymous.”  We’ll check the audio to make sure there’s no identifying information and then upload it to the bandcamp.

Why field recordings?

Conversations about placemaking often focus on what we see or how we move around, but how a place sounds can tell us a lot about it. Recording snapshots of how the city sounded during Treefort is a fun way to capture the spirit of the event, and to think about how sound shapes our experience of the city.
